Food and beverage inventory joins ingredient identity, production consumption, date-sensitive availability, waste, and finished-goods commitments. Unleashed, Katana, and Cin7 cover different centers of that workflow in their published materials. Capability must be tested against the buyer's process and never treated as proof of regulatory compliance.

Buyer constraint: usable quantity is less than total quantity

Picture a producer receiving an ingredient in separate lots, consuming part in a batch, holding another lot for review, and selling finished goods through several channels. A planner may see enough total material even though the usable lot is in the wrong place or expires before the planned run.

Unleashed deserves emphasis when purchasing, stock, and product-economic evidence drive decisions. Katana deserves emphasis when ingredient reservations, production status, and completion are central. Cin7 deserves emphasis when finished goods must stay coordinated across channels, warehouses, and fulfillment.

Decision criteria for lots and production

Evaluate supplier lot capture, date fields, location status, hold and release, bill-of-material history, substitutions, partial completion, yield differences, waste reasons, finished-lot linkage, shipment selection, returns, and correction permissions. Ask what can be traced forward from receipt and backward from a customer event.

Do not infer recall readiness, food-safety compliance, or correct accounting from a feature label. The business should map its obligations with qualified advisers and verify whether the configured records, procedures, and exports support them.

Reproducible mini-check

Create ingredients from different lots and one finished item. Receive a lot short, place another on hold, substitute an approved input for a planned run, record partial completion and waste, release only part of the output, ship it, and return a unit pending investigation. Change the current bill of materials afterward and verify that earlier production remains intelligible. This is a buyer-run protocol; Inventory Software Guide has not executed it.

Exception and conclusion: date status changes after allocation

Allocate finished stock, then change its date or quality status before shipment. Inspect whether availability, pick work, and the customer document update through a visible exception. Choose Unleashed for purchase-and-product control, Katana for production-centered visibility, or Cin7 for connected distribution breadth. Reject any configuration that hides lot identity or silently releases held stock.
